John Woodward is a double bassist studying with Jeremy McCoy at Bard College Conservatory, in his first year of the masters program. Originally from Fresno, California, he completed his bachelor’s at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in 2022, studying under Kurt Muroki, with classes from Jeff Turner and Larry Hurst. During his undergraduate, Woodward participated in various opera, orchestra and ballet productions, under conductors such as Marzio Conti, Arthur Fagen, and Thomas Wilkins, as well as premiering many pieces of new music by contemporary composers. Over summers, he participated in the Prague Summer Nights festival, VDBSI, and the FOOSA summer orchestra festival, studying with teachers such as Bruce Bransby, Samuel Loeck, and Peter Lloyd. He has also been a regular bass instructor at the Sequoia Lake Music Camp since 2018, and an assistant for FOOSA’s half-day program in 2019. At Bard, he has performed with groups including The Orchestra Now, as an assistant in Bard’s Community Orchestra, and with the Da Capo chamber players. In addition to playing classical bass, some of his other musical pursuits include jazz studies and playing trumpet.
