Course Descriptions
Adult Jazz Exercise
This course is offered to adults with little or no previous training. The course will consist of 14 lessons, each one hour long, each Tuesday starting on January 17 through May 15 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. No lessons on January 31, March 13, April 3, and April 24. The course will conclude with an informal demonstration on Thursday May 17, 2012 at 5:00 pm on stage of the Festival Concert Hall.
Focus will be placed on stretching, strengthening, and low impact aerobic exercise while having fun moving to popular music from the 70s, 80s and current tunes of today. Each class will include a basic standing warm-up, seated stretching and strengthening exercises, isolations, basic traveling movements including stylized walks and simple turns. Each class will conclude with a combination and cool down. This is the perfect class for those wanting to “get their groove on” in a safe, non-judgmental environment with others doing the same!
Adult Ballet Exercise
This course is offered to adults with no previous ballet training as well as those who may have studied as a child and want to experience classical ballet movements once again. The course will consist of 14 lessons, each one hour long, each Thursday starting on Thursday January 19, 2012 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am through Thursday May 17, 2012 (no lessons on February 2, March 15, April 5, and April 26.) Focus will be placed on classical ballet positions of the feet, positions and movement of the arms, spinal alignment and placement. Each class will begin with movements at the barre and will progress to exercises in the center floor and movement traveling across the floor. Each exercise is designed to either strengthen or stretch different muscle groups. This class will be enjoyed by those who desire to work slowly and carefully with controlled movements in a more formal environment with others sharing in same the disciplined process. The course will conclude with an informal demonstration on Thursday May 17, 2012 at 5:00 pm on stage of the Festival Concert Hall.
Adult Dance Attire
There is no formal required attire for any of the adult classes other than appropriate shoes for each technique. Socks or tights with no shoes are not allowed for safety reasons.
Ballet Exercise:
Students must wear ballet shoes – canvas or leather. Split sole ballet shoes are recommended, but full sole ballet shoes are also acceptable. Elastic straps should be sewn across the instep to make certain the shoe is secure. Any clothing that allows for full range of movement is recommended. Adults who desire a typical ballet look may wear a leotard of any style and color, tights (pale pink is traditional, but any color is fine). Yoga wear, ballet skirts, sweat/stretch pants are also allowed.
Jazz Exercise:
Students may work with bare feet or wear jazz shoes. Jazz shoes are suggested due to friction from the floor placed on the skin during turns and traveling movements. There are many different styles ranging from a slip on or oxford with laces that tie to a “dance sneaker” (a cross between a jazz shoe and a sneaker). A light weight tennis shoes may also work. Any clothing that allows for full range of motion is recommended. Typical jazz dance attire is black jazz pants with a leotard, but any stretch pant or capri pant with a T-shirt or yoga wear would be fine for this class. Students may want to try the class in bare feet first before making a jazz shoe selection.
