Blinn College District Music Program kicks off the holidays with 'Sounds of the Season' at Festival Hill

The Blinn College District's choirs and wind symphony will bring the spirit of the season to life Saturday, December 7, when they perform at Round Top's Festival Hill, featuring John Rutter's "Magnificat."

Titled "Sounds of the Season," this special performance takes place at 3 p.m. and will feature Blinn vocal and instrumental students and music faculty under the direction of Dr. Sarah Burke and Dr. Paulo Gomes.

The seven movements of John Rutter's "Magnificat" will highlight the afternoon. Rutter’s initial inspiration for this music was another great Magnificat masterpiece, that of Johann Sebastian Bach. The text is based on the classical liturgical set of the Canticle of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the opening chapter of Saint Luke’s Gospel. The passage describes Mary visiting Elizabeth after learning that she is to be the mother of Christ.

John Rutter's "Magnificat" is a joyful piece that makes use of Gregorian chant melodies and creates a celebratory work reminiscent of the outdoor processions honoring the Virgin Mary. Blinn College students and faculty invite the audience to join them in raising their voices to celebrate the season at the conclusion of the concert.

The performance will include the participation of the Brenham High School and Trinity High School choirs in one of the most beautiful concert halls in the nation. Round Top Festival Institute's Festival Concert Hall opened for performances in 1983 and stands as a unique site in the classical music world. The 1,000-seat concert hall's beauty is surpassed only by its exceptional acoustics, which have earned international acclaim.

General admission tickets are $10 and are available at the door and at www.blinn.edu/boxoffice. For more information, call 979-830-4269.
