A frenzied joy prevailed in the Festival Concert Hall when the 2012 Texas Festival Orchestra performed its first program on June 9. Pascal Verrot got power, color and fine playing from this barely 8 days old orchestra in a redoubtable program (even for a well established ensemble.) James Dick performed with his usual panache and rhetoric. Our second maestro of the season, Pedro Carneiro, landed yesterday evening in Houston from Lisboa, Portugal. From impressionism and dischevelled late romanticism, we will dive in the more orderly world of Haydn and Mozart, with a big serving of Beethoven (an unclassafiable genius.)(Saturday June 16 at 3:30 pm.)Early afternoon at 1:30 pm, violinist Gregory Fulkerson, will guide us in a rarefied repertoire for solo violin (J.S. Bach, Elliott Carter and Bela Bartok) at the Edythe Bates Old chapel. In the evening at 7:30 pm, we will pay again homage to Claude Debussy with his string quartet and piano pieces arranged for percussion ensemble. Rounding the program, flutist Ransom Wilson will perform Albert Roussel’s ‘Joueurs de Flute.’
Join us again in the peerless Festival Concert Hall and enjoy some leisurely day on the beautiful grounds of our campus, Festival Hill. |
