The Opening Orchestral program was extremely well received by a frenzied large audience. Conductor Perry So demonstrated with talent and flair how to make an orchestra sounding beautifully and to convey wonder and excitement from the very start of the evening with Richard Wagner’s ‘Flying Dutchman’ overture (see and listen below), then with the fascinating suite from Sergei Prokofiev’s ‘Chout’ and expertly accompanying the always charismatic soloist , James Dick whose performance brought the house to its feet.

After a well deserved rest, the Young Artists will resume their active training, preparing two performances. Tomorrow Tuesday June 11 at 11:00 am under the hands of Emilio Colon and with the participation of the captivating James VanDemark as narrator in an illuminating (Benjamin Britten’s The Young Persons’ Guide to the Orchestra) and entertaining (Camille Sant-Saens’ The Carnival of the Animals) program for Young Persons, who will discover the instruments of a symphony orchestra.
On Saturday June 15 at 3:30 pm, Maestro Heiichiro Ohyama returning to the podium (his last appearance was in 2006) will conduct Brahms’ ‘Academic Overture’, Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for winds and orchestra (oboist Erin Hannigan, clarinetist Kenneth Grant, bassoonist Benjamin Kamins and hornist Michelle Baker) and Paul Hindemith’s evocative symphonic suite from his opera “Mathis der Maler.”
Early afternoon at 1:30 pm, violist Brett Deubner, a 1991 alumnus, will have “Carte Blanche” and will perform various works for viola with the participation of pianist Brian Connelly.
At 7:30 pm, faculty members will perform works by Maurice Durufle, Paul Hindemith and Benjamin Britten.
